With the 14th pick in the 2018 MLB draft, the Seattle Mariners have selected right-hander Logan Gilbert from Stetson University.
Gilbert lost just two games in his entire three-year career with the Hatters, which speaks volumes to his ability pitching at the college level. Gilbert has a traditional four-pitch mix, with a change-up, curveball, and slider to work off of his fastball. He doesn’t have insanely overpowering stuff, as his fastball only sits in the mid-nineties, but he has great control and feel over all four of his pitches.
Gilbert isn’t going to strike a lot of people out, but he induces plenty of soft contact, allowing him to get outs at the college level. He also doesn’t walk a ton of guys as, despite not being a strikeout pitcher, he has a 5:1 strikeout to walk rate.

Gilbert does have the potential to be Seattle’s number two prospect come MLB Pipeline’s first update, though he could fall to number three behind Evan White. Regardless, Gilbert is likely the top arm in Seattle’s system.
Stetson has produced major league stars Jacob DeGrom and Corey Kluber, and Gilbert hopes to be the next major league star to come from the Hatters program.
